In 1969 John Meyer merged with the W.R. Grace company. The Jones New York label was started in 1970 as a line of contemporary women’s separates. It was managed by Sidney Kimmel with Rena Rowan as head designer. In 1975 Kimmel bought the label from Grace and established the Jones Apparel Group. Through the 1970s and 1980s Jones New York grew to be a major producer of ladies’ wear, specializing in separates and career clothing.MENSWEARIn the fall of 1998, Jones launched a Jones New York menswear program, which it expanded further by signing several licensing agreements, such as for men's leather, outerwear, and tailored clothing. Menswear turned out to be a tough business, however.Rena Rowan designed at Jones New York and was a vice president of the company until her retirement in 2000. Today, the Jones Apparel Group also owns many major American labels, including Kasper, Anne Klein, Nine West Shoes, and Rachael Roy.
